Video: Advantages of Duet RPGs with Tim Shorts
Duet games are one-on-one games where a GM runs the game with only one player. As a kid, we often played AD&D this way circa 1980. The player might run alone facing dangers and reaping the awards all to himself, or he might play an additional character, or a sidekick, or even a familiar. I have never used “pets” in my games but some people do.
Duet games are a great way to introduce a new player to gaming or your preferred system. There’s fewer distractions at the table, and the player has the GM’s full attention. Plus, the newbie can ask questions about the rules etc that might otherwise be embarrassing with a full table of grizzled veteran gamers.
Secondly, this style of play allows the player to deep dive into their character, learning and exploring the class, but also developing a meaningful backstory. Earn real in-world experience, familiarize themself with the setting, locations, factions, and NPCs. The solitary player can meet new allies and create lasting rivalries. All of this experience is added to the character sheet, so when they play with others, the character feels lived-in and, most importantly, authentic, as opposed to a glib pre-written backstory. Now, the duet players knows things they can contribute among a group of companions.
Tim Shorts aka @GothridgeManor is a veteran GM, player, and creator (See his Patreon for lots of great free adventures). He is also a friend that I have the good fortune to play Shadowdark with regularly in our Monday night livestreams on YouTube. I always learn from Tim and I appreciate his fellowship.
